The island of Als in Sønderjylland makes an ideal destination for a cycling holiday in Denmark. The island has beautiful countryside consisting of woodlands, beaches, lakes and bogs. Apart from the attractions of the picturesque countryside, you’ll also find yourself in an area that’s rich in history.
If you’re planning a cycling holiday in Denmark, Als is an excellent destination. You can experience the nature reserve at Nordals Naturpark, the forest of Nørreskoven, coastal stretches along the Little Belt and the sound of Alssund, as well as fantastic waters for surfing at Kegnæs and Sydals. The presence of history can be keenly felt all over the island. For instance, it’s on Als that Hjortspringbåden, which is Scandinavia’s oldest archaeological find of weapons, was excavated. Similarly, it was also on Als that the last bloody battle of the Second Schleswig War was fought in June 1864. More recent Danish history is visible at Mjels and north of Fynshav, where there are memorials for Allied pilots and crew that were shot down during the Second World War.

Arrival at Danhostel Sønderborg Vollerup
If you’re up for a cycle ride on the day of your arrival, we recommend that you take a trip into Sønderborg. Ride across King Chr. X’s Bridge and continue up the hill. At the top of the hill, you’ll find the iconic windmill at Dybbøl Mølle and History Centre Dybbøl Banke. Enjoy your evening meal at one of the many delightful restaurants along the waterfront. If you wish to see Sønderborg from on high, you should visit Alsik Hotel & Spa, where from Point-of-view on the 16th floor you have a fantastic view of the town and surrounding area.
Today you have the opportunity to take a longer ride on the southern part of the island. If you didn’t manage to visit the windmill at Dybbøl Mølle on day 1, we recommend that you include it on the day’s ride. In the map material that you were given on arrival there are several suggestions for trips. You can also ride around the Kær peninsula or around Kegnæs.
Today you check out of Danhostel Sønderborg Vollerup and cycle north to Nordborg. You can take the Baltic Sea Cycle Route (National cycle route 8) to the coast of Als and continue along the route to Fynshav. From here you can continue through the forest at Nørreskoven and along the coast, before turning west into Nordborg, where you’ll find your hotel.
Explore the north of the island today! There are several suggestions for trips in the folder that you received on arrival, so take a look at the different options and choose the route – or routes – that best matches your wishes, both in terms of distance and what you wish to see on the route.
Today you cycle back to Danhostel Sønderborg Vollerup, where you had the option of leaving your car while on your cycling trip. Pick up your baggage at reception. If you’re planning to arrive in Sønderborg by public transport, please specify this when booking your stay. We’ll then find an alternative solution so that you can collect your baggage somewhere in the centre of Sønderborg.
When you depart from Nordborg, we actually recommend that you take an alternative route by leaving the island. Ride to Hardeshøj on the west coast of Als, from where you can take the ferry, ‘Bitten’, to Ballebro in Jutland. From here you can join the Baltic Sea Cycle Route (National cycle route 5) to Sønderborg.
